I SUPPOSE I should have been happy upon learning that one of my favorite summer foods is actually good for me. But one of the great joys of summer is eating poorly.

Who doesn’t love a grilled cheeseburger, especially one made from ground beef so fatty it resembles the pink and white complexion of an elderly Englishman’s cheeks? And we hold dear the classic hot dog, a glorious tube of chemical-laden mystery meat.

But perhaps the most cherished of all summer foods is barbecue. For some, that means pork ribs; for others, pulled pork. For me, it means slow-smoked Texas-style beef brisket. + read full article

What to order: The brisket sandwich at Beach Pit BBQ, at two locations including the outdoor plaza behind the right field bleachers. The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender and served on a soft white bun, just as they do down South. Only one complaint: ask for an extra side of barbecue sauce; the smoky and tangy sauce is that good.

Beach Pit BBQ meets Tustin Garage

...Since its January opening, the new (or is it old?) Tustin Garage location has drawn a steady stream of local families, empty nesters, and sports fans looking for hearty grub and brewskis to accompany those games on the flat screens. This is the second Beach Pit (the Costa Mesa original opened in 2005), so it operates with a practiced smoothness that comes from familiarity.
